How It Started
Tommy Glenn Carmichael is known for his skill in cheating slot machines. A former maintenance technician, he created a device that triggered payouts from the machines. Even after being arrested for fraud in 1985, Carmichael continued cheating and made about $10,000 a day. His arrests didn’t stop him, and he remains one of the most notorious cheaters in the world of casinos.
He found that by tying a coin to a wire and inserting it into the machine, he could play as much as he wanted without paying a single cent.
In a short time, Tommy earned a lot of money, but when suspicions arose in California that he was cheating, he decided to make his “big move” in Las Vegas.
Tommy became known in casino circles for his scams as early as the 1960s. Although he was arrested and served time in prison multiple times, this didn’t stop him from devising plans to outsmart the system.
His time in prison even sparked creativity, as it was there that he invented his device, which he called the “monkey paw.” With it, he could change the settings on slot machines—or outright hack them.
