Around the 1970s, there were a few casino con artists that are as intriguing as Ida Summer.

Back then, society didn’t believe that women could be gamblers, let alone gambling cheaters. This is why she was given the nickname “Vegas Vixen”.

What made her interesting is that she was a Southern-bred mum of four, which many described as stunning. She knew this as well. That’s why she used her looks and other psychological tactics to beat the casinos.

Her story is like a movie, literally. It goes from success to failure. However, the con was one-of-a-kind, and it told us that even women can cheat in gambling.

Early Life & Background of Ida Summers

There isn’t too much information about the early upbringing of Ida Summers. We do know, however, that she was born around the 1940s and was raised in South America.

However, in her twenties, she had drifted west. She was drawn by the glamour and danger of Las Vegas. When she moved here in the 1950s, she got a job at a small casino. This was being a blackjack dealer.

By the late 1960s, she was no longer a blackjack dealer, though. She was a player. Over the years of dealing blackjack, she discovered a select few secrets that would allow her to win more and even have an edge over the house.

Becoming “The Vegas Vixen”

By the early 1970s, Ida Summer had earned a reputation on the Vegas Strip. Casino owners, security, pit bosses, hosts, etc., loved her.

With long brown hair, a petite 5’2” frame, and movie-star looks, she could melt the suspicions of pit bosses and dealers. She used this to her advantage as well. Her flirtation and confidence became her camouflage.

This was only part of her plan, though. She also spent countless hours learning card mechanics and sleight-of-hand tricks. Combined with her befriending nature, she would be able to pull off her cheat under people’s noses without them realising.

While she worked alone for some time, quickly, Summers realised she needed some extra hands. That’s when she developed a team of accomplices to help her. This includes a couple of trusted male friends.

These partners helped her execute more complex cons in exchange for a slice of the winnings. This was the start of Summers making a lot of money.

The Art of the Con

Summers’ most famous scam was card manipulation. The technique chosen was called “hand mucking”. Essentially, this is the art of secretly swapping cards in play.

In practice, Ida would bring one or two of her own cards into the game. She would then introduce them at the perfect moment to improve her hand.

To get such cards into the system, Summers had to be very crafty. She stole decks from dealers and even charmed some into just giving her some decks to “practice at home with”.

On the casino floor, she hid these up her sleeves. During a blackjack hand, when she saw an opportunity, she’d remove the useless card and introduce the useful card using sleight of hand.

Later on in her career, she also employed “coolers”. These are cold decks (pre-arranged decks) that someone would secretly place into the game.

Psychological Tactics

What made Summers’ success was her understanding of psychology. She used her body language, charisma, and mind games to disarm casino workers.

Everyone she interacted with loved her. Even better, the majority of them were men. By befriending them and being flirtatious, nobody looks at Summers like a cheating suspect. Most of them fancied her.

The way she interacted with these people was skilful. She’d engage in conversation at important moments, ask personal questions, hold eye contact, laugh, and sometimes, even touch them (if they were within arm’s reach).

All together, it completely disarmed the people around her. She could perform her sleight-of-hand tricks, and nobody even suspected a thing.

Biggest Scores of Ida Summers

Ida’s strategy was a success. She managed to take thousands of dollars from casinos without them knowing about it.

First Big Win of Ida Summers

In the late 1960s, Summers started making some serious money. The History Channel, in its documentary, said she made tens of thousands of dollars in a single weekend.

Another report mentioned that, around the same time, she claimed that she made $100,000 in just two nights of cheating. However, the exact amounts aren’t verified by the casino or Ida herself.

During this time, she was probably one of the best (in the casino’s eyes) female gamblers in Vegas. There weren’t many at the time, which made her even more unique.

The Downtown Vegas Run

In another legendary streak, Summers reportedly rotated through several downtown Las Vegas casinos over a few days, pulling the same old tricks. By the week’s end, she’d pocketed well into the five figures.

Though, like most of her wins, the actual figures are unknown, she managed to buy a house with these winnings. Therefore, we imagine it must have been around the $50,000 to $80,000 mark, perhaps a little higher.

Consistently Large Wins

Beyond her main headline wins, she was known for being consistent. More often than not, she’d win thousands of dollars per day during her hot streak.

She didn’t only stay in Vegas, either. She went around all casinos in Reno and Lake Tahoe as well, scamming them out of a hefty amount of money.

The Fall of a Legend

As you can imagine, though, Summer eventually got caught. Her cheats were exposed, and she got arrested.

Casinos Catch On

Around the mid-1970s, casinos were starting to catch on. This was only a matter of time; however, all casino cheats get caught in Vegas at one point.

Her luck started to run out as surveillance technology improved. Casino owners started installing video cameras on the tables, training staff to look out for cheats, and applying all types of anti-card manipulation technology.

Arrest & Aftermath

Eventually, Ida Summer got arrested, and it made headlines. Her glamorous casino scam that had everything, including beauty, brains, and betrayal, now had handcuffs.

Summer was charged with multiple counts of fraud and cheating. These were serious charges that could have landed her years in prison. However, despite this, she actually never spent a single day behind bars.

In court, she received a very light sentence: probation. Compared to other casino cheats that committed similar crimes, this was just a slap on the wrist. But how did she even pull this off?

Well, that’s unknown. Some say she used her people skills to her advantage. This isn’t completely true, though. Maybe she did, maybe she didn’t. What was more likely is that she gave up a few of her accomplices.

Unlike Summer, a few of the men who worked for her ended up serving jail time. Though reports don’t mention that she gave them up, it looks likely.

Life After Las Vegas

Following her narrow escape from serious punishment, Summers did something that many thought she wouldn’t. She disappeared.

After the mid-1970s, she kept a low profile. It was almost like she fled the country or state and never returned. Some say she escaped with some winnings, and others say she continued to gamble under aliases.

There were more dark stories as well. Back in the 70s, Vegas was massively influenced by the Mafia. Given that she tried to cheat these gangs out of money, they may have murdered her. This is, however, just a theory.

Although these are all “what-ifs”, we do know one thing. Summers disappeared from the scene for good (well, at least under her name). And, to this day, it remains a mystery what she did after getting arrested.

Legacy & Impact

It goes without saying that Ida Summers’ story is one of a kind. Simply, it’s rare. Nobody during her time would have expected a woman to have such a career.

Breaking the Mould

Something Summers will always be known for is breaking the mould. She wasn’t a regular casino cheat. Before her, casino cheats were mostly men. Therefore, the fact that she was a woman was very rare.

During this time, there were hardly any women at casinos, especially participating in the casino games themselves. Though unique and somewhat odd for this time, it’s something that she played to her advantage remarkably well.

Nobody would have expected anything from her. The casino staff, who were mostly men, probably looked at her as a beautiful woman. What bad could happen? In the beginning, nothing. They didn’t think anything of it.

She knew how men worked, though. Some engaging questions and a flirt here and there allowed her to get away with a lot. If a man tried to do this during this time, it’d have quite the opposite effect.

Still to this day, she stands among the few women casino cheats. There aren’t many at all. Her story, though, is one that will be remembered for a long time.

Las Vegas Learns Its Lesson

Casinos hate losing and hate being conned even more. Therefore, after being exploited by Summers, all casinos on the Vegas Strip were impacted.

New anti-cheating technology has become available, and staff members were trained on how to identify such people as Summers. Eventually, this also led to Summers getting caught, so it clearly worked.

Performing the cheats that Summers in today’s world wouldn’t even be possible. The technology and training to stop such individuals are far too good. Of course, it may happen, but it happens a fraction of the time as it used to.

As a result, even though the house was lost temporarily, they won in the end. They now have a much better edge than ever before by learning from cheating like Summers.

Conclusion

Ida Summers still remains a fascinating figure in Las Vegas history. She was the woman who dared to outwit the system that was, supposedly, unbeatable.

Her story is legendary. Armed with her beauty, charm, and a few hidden cards, she was able to steal a casino’s money from right under their nose. They didn’t expect a thing, and she got away with it for years.

Effectively, she continuously robbed a bank without hurting anyone with violence or getting caught. She sneakily went into the vault and walked away like nothing happened. Without question, it’s impressive.

Like most casino cheaters like Martha Ogman and Stefan Mandel, though, she did end up getting caught. We’re unsure how, but she didn’t serve any time despite being arrested for some pretty serious crimes. Some of her teammates, however, did get time behind bars.

Why she didn’t and they did is unknown. We expect that she sold some of her secrets or helped the police or FBI with another case.
